Ants

How to Get Rid of Ants

Black House Ant:

True to their name – these ants love houses. They like to build their nests in roof cavities, in walls, and around window frames, and will use trees and plants next to your home as bridges to gain access to these areas.

These ants are attracted to anything sweet and with a lot of sugar, if they find something in a cupboard or around the house they’ll alert their colony to bring it back to the nest.

Obvious signs of infestation include seeing these ants in small clusters or trails of them leading back to their colony, but another common indication is small piles of black debris around the house from the ants discarding their dead from the nest.

To control these ants, the location of the nests must be identified and destroyed by injecting controlling measures into the walls or roof cavities where they have settled. Trimming back trees and plants from the house can help to avoid re-nesting, as well as using a preventative barrier.

Argentine Ant:

These ants aren’t a native species to Tasmania, and were introduced to the state in the 1970s. They like to nest externally as opposed to somewhere within the house, coming inside only to source food and water before returning back to their nest outside.

Because their nests are outside, the trails of them are longer and their nests more difficult to track down as nests of species that build them indoors.

In order to treat these, the nests must be located and destroyed, as well as applying barriers to protect the home from them coming back into it.

Jack Jumper:

This infamous species of ant are vicious. While their bites have a sharp sting and a searing pain, they’re ultimately harmless to most. However, a small percentage of the population are allergic to their bites and need to carry an epi-pen.

They nest in underground rockeries outside of the home, which need to be destroyed to control them on your property.

Normal spraying techniques that are used on other ant species don’t work on jack jumpers, so time needs to be taken to properly locate and destroy all nests on the property to effectively control these ants.
